匯豐及恒生銀行早前計劃將自動櫃員機的最低提款額由港幣一百元提高至三百元,以減省排隊時間。換言之,每次「㩒錢」最低消費為三百元,建議立即惹來公眾反響:

陳方安生勝出立法會補選,首天就職便與民政事務局長曾德成擦出火花,好不熱鬧:

Newly sworn-in lawmaker Anson Chan Fang On-sang and a top government official locked horns yesterday…(The Standard, 2007/12/6)

高級官員、議員等在上任前,一般要宣誓就職。如果你「發誓當食生菜」,應該懂得發誓的英文swear。說到「宣誓就職」,英文會用動詞片語swear somebody in/into,但要留意,這個片語絕大部分情況下都用於被動語態(passive voice),所以宣誓就職行政長官的英文是He was sworn in as chief executive。例句的sworn-in則是將動詞轉成過去分詞,變成形容詞的角色。

先來一個常識題:香港哪個政治部門,像廉政公署般,獨立於其他部門,只向行政長官負責,不過就專「捉人盤數」?相信你已猜到,那是審計署:

Known for its austerity, the audit commission has earned a reputation for picking on departments and public bodies that have spent taxpayers' money unwisely, if not lavishly. (The Standard, 2007/11/26)

Austerity是「苛刻」、「嚴厲」之意,正好形容對財務數字一絲不苟的審計署(Audit Commission)。其形容詞austere有「清苦」之意,例如僧人的生活清靜無為,可用austere來形容。

我們常叫那些亂花錢的人做「大花筒」,偏偏有一個公營機構叫做旅遊發展局,也得此綽號:

區議會選舉(District Council Elections)塵埃落定,泛民主派和親中陣營民建聯對壘,最終泛民慘敗,一改2003年的結果。事實上,近年經濟大好,民怨大減,泛民取勝不易,早就心裏有數,:
