新年快樂！相信大家過了一個愉快的聖誕節，並在寒冷中迎接2008年吧。
說起聖誕節，令我想起一段新聞。話說，美國人太忙了，忙得沒有時間打理生活，包括準備聖誕，於是美國出現了「生活經理」(lifestyle manager)這種行業：

高級官員、議員等在上任前，一般要宣誓就職。如果你「發誓當食生菜」，應該懂得發誓的英文swear。說到「宣誓就職」，英文會用動詞片語swear somebody in/into，但要留意，這個片語絕大部分情況下都用於被動語態(passive voice)，所以宣誓就職行政長官的英文是He was sworn in as chief executive。例句的sworn-in則是將動詞轉成過去分詞，變成形容詞的角色。

先來一個常識題：香港哪個政治部門，像廉政公署般，獨立於其他部門，只向行政長官負責，不過就專「捉人盤數」？相信你已猜到，那是審計署：

Austerity是「苛刻」、「嚴厲」之意，正好形容對財務數字一絲不苟的審計署(Audit Commission)。其形容詞austere有「清苦」之意，例如僧人的生活清靜無為，可用austere來形容。
我們常叫那些亂花錢的人做「大花筒」，偏偏有一個公營機構叫做旅遊發展局，也得此綽號：
